Several of our members offer tuition towards the Society's diploma in botanical illustration. Classes are held at Dartington Hall (Devon), the Eden Project (Cornwall) and Kingston Maurward (Dorset).

The textbook is Botanical Illustration Course with the Eden Project, by Rosie Martin & Meriel Thurstan, pub. BT Batsford 2006.

Also of interest, by the same authors, is Contemporary Botanical Illustration pub. May 2008.

SWSBA Diploma Course

The SWSBA diploma course teaches the basic skills essential for accurate illustration of plant material in watercolour within the context of botanical painting, through a series of structured exercises.

Subjects include observation; light and shade; pencil drawing with line and tone; colour mixing and application; paper surfaces and their properties; understanding paint and brushes; washes, stippling, blended tone; complex forms such as a pineapple or pine cone; velvety petals, shiny surfaces, highlights, lowlights, delicate textures and pattern; composition; problem solving; presentation and display.
