SWSBA at the RHS

11th July 2018 to 12th July 2018

A group of SWSBA members will be exhibiting at the RHS in July. The theme for the exhibit is The Lost Plant Names from the Oxford Junior Dictionary. The latest edition of the dictionary omits such favourites as poppy, pansy, ash, clover, heather, violet, willow, which children will no longer be able to reference. As our colleague at Plantlife said, these words conjure up the changing seasons and a relationship with nature that we have probably enjoyed since we were children. But in a move that surprised many of us, the Oxford Junior Dictionary left the above words out of their latest edition. This is not because the Oxford Junior Dictionary is anti-nature; it is simply a reflection that for many children today, dandelions, acorns and chestnuts are not relevant. ‘Broadband’ and ‘cut and paste’ are.

With 22 paintings in all, the exhibit will be full of interest, and is important in that it illustrates many of Britain’s wild flora.

The exhibition is open to the public on Wednesday 11 July (11am-8pm) and Thursday 12 July (11am-6pm) at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Lindley Hall, Westminster, SW1P 2QW.
